Because “Universal design (UD) proposes that inclusive design is better design for all (Womac 497). It seems to me that multimodal composition is how we invite all students with all learning types to be apart of the dialogue. In the past I have used technology to allow students to make up / redo assignments. This has been helpful for:
Vocabulary tests - More exposure and practice words correlates to a better chance that students will retain them. Online vocabulary games like Quizlet allow students to get multiple repetitions at their own pace.
Allowing for the revision and resubmission of alphabetic text also allows students to be more engaged with the activities. However, I would like to expand my assignments beyond just alphabetic texts. I think that giving students the autonomy in how they demonstrate critical understanding would give more students a voice as it would cater to their strengths as a individual thinkers. Differentiation is not something that you as a teacher should be doing for select students, but for all students, it’s just effective practice.
